Alefbe is one of the few apps made specifically to teach Pashto, with audio for every letter, word and phrase. It covers the full 44 letter alphabet, over 300 words and phrases, and everyday expressions, and it works on the web, iPhone and Android. Most large language apps, including Duolingo, do not offer Pashto at all.
Alefbe teaches Farsi with Dari audio, so it is built for learners who want the Afghan variety of Persian. Most Persian courses use the Iranian accent and Iranian everyday words. In Alefbe you choose Farsi, and every letter, word and phrase is recorded in Dari.
No. Duolingo does not offer Pashto or Dari. Alefbe is built specifically for Farsi (Dari) and Pashto, and teaches both from the alphabet up.
Yes. Alefbe is completely free in most countries of the world, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, India and the Gulf countries, with every lesson in both Pashto and Farsi (Dari) and no card needed. It is paid only in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and most of Europe. There, creating an account is free and the first three alphabet lessons are free: Learn the Letters, All Letters in Order, and Letter Hunt.
Yes. Persian is the English name, Farsi is the name speakers use, and Dari is the name used in Afghanistan for the Persian spoken there. The differences are mostly accent and some everyday words, much like American and British English. In Alefbe you choose Farsi, and the audio uses the Dari dialect.
Learn Dari if you want to talk with Afghan family, friends, neighbors or colleagues. Iranian Farsi has more learning material, but its accent and some common words sound Iranian to Afghan ears. Alefbe teaches Persian with Dari audio for this reason.
The Farsi (Dari) alphabet has 32 letters. It uses the Perso-Arabic script and is written from right to left, and most letters change shape depending on where they are in a word. Alefbe teaches each letter with its sound, an example word, and its four shapes.
The Pashto alphabet has 44 letters. It uses the same script as Farsi and adds letters that Farsi does not have, such as ټ، ډ، ړ، ږ، ښ، څ and ځ. Alefbe teaches all 44 letters with audio, including these Pashto letters.
The Pashto alphabet is very learnable: most learners finish it in a few weeks of short daily practice. The harder part for English speakers is a few new sounds, such as those of ړ، ږ and ښ. Hearing each letter many times helps, which is why every letter and word in Alefbe has audio you can replay.
Both. Pashto is one language with the same alphabet and written form in Afghanistan and Pakistan. There are regional accents, but Pashto learned on Alefbe works for speakers on both sides of the border.
Start with the alphabet: learn each letter with its sound, then its shapes, then read common everyday words. Alefbe follows exactly this order. Because you already know the spoken words, reading usually comes much faster for you than for a complete beginner.
Alefbe lets a parent create up to 6 learner profiles on one account, one for each child, with a name, age and avatar. Each profile keeps its own progress, XP and daily streak. Lessons use pictures, audio and short games.
Yes. Alefbe is made for complete beginners, with English instructions and audio for everything. Some learners are English speakers who want to connect with Afghan neighbors, colleagues or a partner's family.
Alefbe is free in most countries. In the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and most of Europe, creating an account and the first three alphabet lessons are free, and full access is 7.99 USD per month or 29.99 USD per year, which is about 2.50 USD per month. Every subscription includes up to 6 learner profiles, and you can cancel anytime.
Alefbe works on iPhone and iPad from the App Store, on Android from Google Play, and in any web browser at learn.alefbe.app. Your progress is saved to your account and moves with you between devices.
Most learners finish the Farsi or Pashto alphabet in a few weeks of short daily sessions. Alefbe keeps lessons short, and a daily goal and streak help you practice a little every day.
You will be able to read the full alphabet, recognize several hundred common words, and use everyday phrases. Alefbe is a beginner course. Grammar lessons and speaking practice are planned but not available yet.
